Stocks jump after strong jobs report

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks jumped sharply in morning trading on news that the unemployment rate dropped to the lowest level in 2 years. The Dow Jones industrial average gained more than 150 points.

Before the market opened Friday, the Labor Department said companies hired 243,000 employees in January, the strongest job growth in nine months. The increase in hiring pushed the unemployment rate down to 8.3 percent.

More evidence that the economy is gaining strength followed the jobs report. The government said factory orders rose 1.1 percent in December, supported by a rebound in orders for heavy machinery. A trade group said the service industry expanded at the fastest pace since last February.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 16 points, or 1.3 percent, to 1,342, less than an hour after the opening bell. The S&P 500 is on track to rise for the fifth straight week, the longest weekly winning streak since January of 2011. It's gained 6.5 percent so far this year.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped 158 points to 12,864. That's a gain of 1.3 percent. Bank of America Corp. led the Dow, rising 5.6 percent.

The Nasdaq composite added 39 points, or 1.3 percent, to 2,898.

The U.S. jobs figures helped stocks and the euro rally on Friday despite further evidence that the 17-country eurozone is heading for recession. Germany's DAX rose 1.3 percent and France's CAC-40 gained 0.8 percent.

Among companies whose stocks are making large moves Friday:

— Weyerhaeuser gained 4 percent after reporting better quarterly earnings than analysts' forecasts. The timber and real estate company's earnings still sank 62 percent.

— Video game maker Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. jumped 5 percent. The company reported a 65 percent drop in quarterly profits after the market closed Thursday, but Wall Street's analysts expected much worse.

This is Wall Street recognizing that more jobs = more demand = more profit. MUCH HEALTHIER and more sane than short sighted Wall Street vision of most of past 40 years: Fewer Jobs for a Company means lower costs and more profits. "Free Trade" means US companies are free to trade US jobs for jobs overseas. Heck, that maximizes shareholder value (at least in the short or intermediate run - thank you, Milton Friedman,) so what could be wrong with that?

There sure are a lot of bashers on this board who want nothing more than to see The United States fail. As the old saying goes: "America, love it or leave it." And that should probably start with that limey run operation Fox News.

I agree, one exception "limey" is a term for British especially sailors, Rupert is Australian and his co-owner Saudi Prince is Muslim - Oh My ! - LOL !

Having a hard time believing the numbers regarding unemployed. Everyday I read where this company or that one is closing down, bankrupt, laying off not have I seen anyone hiring in great numbers unless you are in the health industry. I think the numbers are being spinned abit too much, also I read and heard is when the liberal media spins out a number provided by our current administration you can or subtract 10% to get the real numbers. So does that make the number 18.3%, unemployed I for one think so.

Have any evidence the numbers are false? anything at all?

The Republicans will most likely now not want to extend the dozen or so tax cuts and unemployment benefits in order to try to sabotage the economy for 2012

Funny how all the conservatives hate this good news and come up with ridiculous conspiracy theories. BTW, exactly HOW is this some liberal media conspiracy? The news came from the Labor Department. Conservatives make as though "THE MEDIA" made the whole thing up. And they wonder why people laugh at them.

I think Greg from Warren needs to get out of his mother's basement and get a job. People are hiring again, thanks to Obama's policies....

I would love to refer you all to a previous post I mentioned a few things on, but it was blocked by the Left winged Obama lover's (named yahoo). I mentioned in it that we would see more attacks on the right winger's and the "stories of an economic recovery, and miraculous jobs creation" would be plastered all over the yahoo site. Here they are. Where is the hard evidence of the 3-inc system (incompetent, incumbent, incorporated)? Unemployment down... HMMMM? I'd bet it has much to do with the people who have exhausted their jobless benefits are now off of the books and are no longer being trackedand reported. I really don't know why I'm continuing to type as I'm certain this will get screened and not be permitted to exist. Come on yahoo... allow this one...(the truth) for once and let the people respond.

Meanwhile in reality, corporate giants actually get tax credits to ship the good jobs overseas. Or how about the H1B visa, they can import help because they cant find "qualified Americans for the job" and get an incentive from our uncle for doing it.

Thank goodness I'm 61 and didn't go through my formative years listening to the incredible negativity that most people show in places like this. Based on the world population, your odds of being born in this country were 20-1. If you believe this is the greatest country on earth (I do!!) you beat the odds by a ton just being here. Show some gratitude instead of all this nasty stuff. Grow up a little bit and kiss the ground you live on.

And here come all the GOPbots claiming these numbers are not true, and are being manipulated. But if they reported that unemployment rose, then they would believe 100% and would be calling for Obama's head.. It just goes to prove that the GOP cares far more about seeing Obama fail than seeing Americans succeed.

Wow, all these negative comments on here. Can you people just be happy for even one second when good news comes out?
