Winners and losers

Stocks slipping into the close today include Micron Technology on weak third quarter revenue, Lions Gate after announcing plans to acquire Starz, and Williams Companies— shares of the pipeline company down after half of its board, including the chairman, resigned. This comes a day after rival Energy Transfer Equity walked away from its deal to buy Williams.

Stocks on the move higher today include Harley Davidson on rumors of takeover interest by private equity, Netflix after Canaccord Genuity initiated coverage with a buy recommendation, and Thor Industries— the recreational vehicle maker announced plans to buy RV-products maker Jayco Corp for $576 million.

Looking ahead

Here's what will be making headlines next week:

  • Fed watch continues on Tuesday and Wednesday, with speeches by Fed Governor Daniel Tarullo and New York Fed President William Dudley.

  • We'll get the latest on the jobs situation, with June's payroll and unemployment numbers. The previous reading showed a dismal payrolls gain of 38,000 jobs for May. Analysts are looking for that number to be revised upward.

  • Finally, as the US celebrates the 4th of July, NASA's solar-powered spacecraft will arrive at Jupiter. Juno, launched in 2011, will study the origins, structure and atmosphere of Jupiter. Over the course of the mission, Juno will slowly breakdown, due to the planet's harsh radiation environment.
