NEW YORK (AP) -- Stocks are lower at midday as they limp to the finish line for the third quarter.
Just before noon, the Dow Jones industrial average is off 74 points at 13,412. the Standard & Poor's 500 index is down nine at 1,438. And the Nasdaq composite index is down 21 at 3,115.
Investors are worried about the health of Spain's financial sector and discouraged that U.S. consumer spending rose last month only because of higher gasoline prices. Spain is set to release stress-test results for 14 banks after European markets close.
Stocks have fallen in six of the last seven trading sessions. Even with the declines, stocks are set to post small gains for the quarter.
