LOOKING AHEAD: Steel maker ArcelorMittal was cautiously optimistic despite a fourth quarter made worse by the European financial crisis.
THE NUMBERS: The Luxembourg company posted a $1 billion net loss in the three months that ended in December, compared with a $780 million loss a year earlier, even though sales spiked 8.5 percent at $22.45 billion.
NEW LEAF: The company said economic sentiment had improved in the first weeks of the new year, particularly in the U.S., and ArcelorMittal is optimistic about sales and earnings in the first half of the year. Shares rose almost 2 percent.
