TRAFFIC JAM: Demand for flights in Brazil has nearly tripled in the past decade. That is straining a system preparing for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

ON THE GROUND: Air travelers suffer from packed airports, higher ticket prices, and delays often caused by poor airport infrastructure, including problems with runways and radar systems that air control operators rely on.

ON IT: Total investment on airport upgrades jumped from $3.2 billion at the beginning of 2011 to $3.7 billion) at end of the year. The government says all airport upgrades will be finished in time for the World Cup.
