WAIT AND SEE: The CEOs of some of the nation's biggest homebuilding companies say the housing market appears to have stabilized. But they're being careful not to get overly optimistic on how housing will fare in 2012.
WORST YEAR: A year ago, many experts forecast housing would improve in 2011. Instead, sales of new homes hit the lowest level on records going back a half-century.
BACKLOG: MDC Holdings, M/I Homes and Beazer Homes USA ended the October-December quarter with a sharp increase in their backlog of homes under contract. That's a good sign heading into the spring home-selling season.
