PROFITS UP: Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. said net income in the final quarter of 2011 rose nearly two-thirds to an adjusted 39 cents per share, beating the 34 cents expected by analysts.
HACKING COSTS: The company booked an $87 million charge related to the U.K. phone-hacking scandal, following a $91 million charge in the previous quarter. Legal costs look likely to continue due to a new wave of lawsuits and three ongoing police probes.
CASH OUTLAY: Executives say the company plans to spend another $2.3 billion buying back shares through June, on top of the $2.7 billion it has spent so far. They opened the door to returning more cash to shareholders after that.
