Summary Box: UN approves faster mobile technology

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW: A technology committee within the United Nations has approved for use the next generation of mobile technology which would make current electronic tablets and cell phone technology obsolete. The time it would take for a website to load on a cell phone, using the new technology, would be imperceptible.

WE CAN BUILD IT FASTER: Experts say the technology will allow mobile devices 500 times faster than the 3G technology currently used on most cell phones. While there is 4G technology in use right now, some call the new standards, "true" 4G, or fourth generation. The technology hasn't been available until now because the U.N. must first approve of the international standards for its use.

DON'T LINE UP YET: The technology will be used immediately for planning changes to equipment but it could take two years to show up on consumers' smartphone, tablets and other devices because of the time it takes to get to production.
