The wireless provider owned by Germany's Deutsche Telekom added 365,000 prepaid customers in Q3 but lost 492,000 postpaid subscribers. Postpaid subscribers sign service contracts and are billed monthly. They spend more on data services than prepaid customers. Deutsche Telekom signed a deal to merge T-Mobile USA with MetroPCS Communications (PCS) on Oct. 3. The German carrier will own 74% of a recapitalized, publicly traded company. Deutsche Telekom might yet have to contend with a counteroffer for MetroPCS by Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S).
