Shares of CA-based medical instruments maker Varian Medical Systems, Inc. (VAR) rose 0.2% following the announcement that the oncology department at Kaiser-Franz-Josef Hospital has become the first one in Europe to treat patients using VAR’s PerfectPitch couch.
The PerfectPitch robotic couch – an enhanced patient positioning device – has been introduced by the hospital as an integrated element of VAR’s latest TrueBeam 2.0 system used to optimize radiotherapy treatments.
VAR’s PerfectPitch couch is an integrated six degrees of freedom (6DoF) robotic treatment couch that provides more precision and flexibility while imaging and treating, and helps reduce the time required to set up the patient. It enables optimum patient positioning during treatment and adjusting of the position for any misalignments, thus ensuring patient support and comfort throughout the treatment process.
The additional positioning capabilities provided by PerfectPitch, when used in combination with TrueBeam’s advanced image guidance and motion management tools, results in high precision radiotherapy and radiosurgery treatments.
VAR is set to exhibit its TrueBeam 2.0 platform and PerfectPitch couch among other products at the ESTRO (European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology) meeting, which will take place in Vienna from April 4–7. Visitors to the VAR booth can sign up for clinical visits to see Kaiser-Franz-Josef Hospital's two TrueBeam STx systems in operation and speak to the clinical teams in charge of them.
Last month, VAR had exhibited a comprehensive line of its imaging components at the annual meeting of the European Congress of Radiology (ECR.V) held at Vienna, following which, its share price scaled a new 52-week high and continued to hover around that range in the subsequent trading sessions.
Currently, VAR has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). Other stocks performing well in the medical instruments industry include Cynosure, Inc. (CYNO), Olympus Corp. (OCPNY) and Syneron Medical Ltd. (ELOS). All the three stocks sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
