Tassimo coffee makers recalled over burn risk

Gov't: Tassimo brewers and espresso packages recalled amid rupture, burn risk concerns

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Home-brewed coffee lovers, take note: More than a million popular coffee makers are being recalled after dozens of reports of the brewers spraying hot liquid, coffee grounds or tea leaves onto people.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says there have been 140 reports of problems with the Tassimo (TAH'-sih-moh) single-cup brewers dousing people, including 37 cases involving second-degree burns.

In one incident, a 10-year-old girl was hospitalized with second-degree burns to her face and neck.

CPSC says the coffee maker's "T-disc," the plastic disc that holds the coffee or tea, can burst while brewing.

About 835,000 coffee makers are on recall in the United States; another 900,000 in Canada.

The agency also announced the recall of 4 million packages of Tassimo espresso T-discs after 21 reports of problems.

Are not these items suppose to be tested again and again and again before distribution to stores? I remember way back in the early 1960s (when the world was normal) that when you purchased something, it lasted forever. Today's motto is this: buy it, use it for 2 years, toss out in the garbage and buy another one. Thanks for filling up the land fills with crap! Sickening.

1 year is more likely then trash and repurchase. The cycle never ends, junk that wouldn't have ever passed quality control twenty five years ago.
    • Kayce 3 months ago
You will be lucky if it lasts two years!

I am from Des Plaines and also remember quality. That has gone the way of price, for many years now. Sell, sell, sell, at the lowest price possible, whether it lasts or not, and most Americans seem to fall for it. China will overtake the US economicaly in the future. It will take a while, but it is happening.

It is even a better wake up when brewed in American made products.

You are right. The manufacture will sell the concept of how much they can save the hospital by buying foreign, verses our expensive American products. The insurance companies are already thinking about this as we speak.

Bought a electric percolator - Farberware - had one years ago that lasted 15 years with daily use. The new percolator -- burned out in 3 months -- cost $60. THought it might be my fault for leaving it on too long and bought another - lasted 4 months - both made in China. So I went to E-bay and for $10 I bought a used, old pot - have had a year and it is great. Made in the USA. I went into the site to complain and found that others had bought a China-made pot and it had no place to plug it in, others said the pot caught fire at the first try, others said it burned out in 1 month - etc. So go to E-bay and buy an old pot - do not buy Made in China - junk!!

I still use a farberware percolator from late 70's-made in usa-works like a charm everytime. Go on ebay and you can find either lightly used or new in box percolators that are older but made in usa and will probably last umpteen lifetimes over any of china made crap.

I was browsing through a vintage goods store and found this old waffle maker, a twin model that made two four to five inch square waffles. Paid five dollars for it, took it home, cleaned it up and it makes great waffles even though it was made in the thirties. Incredibly well made machine.

I'd rather pay more for quality in the USA than the garbage out of china. Not to mention how their treat their workers. Some things made out of Thailand appear to be of better quality.

Years ago, Sanyo bought out General Electric.... but I don't know who owns them now. Here is something that torques my jaw.... Alesis is a very popular brand who makes professional equipment for the recording industry. A few years ago I bought their Master Link Master disk studio recorder with 96-Khz resolution (not Red Book). Anyway, I was shocked and angry when I got it because it was manufactured in CHINA! How did China manufacture an extreme precision piece of equipment like that? We are giving the Chicoms extremely high precision manufacturing machines!

Same old story. A well-known and reliable American company makes quality products, but the company sells out to some cheap Chinese bunch, they retain the name (like "Sunbeam') as a decoy and start putting out trash under that name. Another example is G.E., whose appliances used to be fine. Now even the service people tell you they are just junk that's full of engineering shortcuts.

For all of you complaining about foreign made junk; I agree with you. However, how many of you would still be complaining if things were made in America again but cost three times as much as products made abroad? You can't have it both ways. Either support American made and pay for fair wages or pay cheaper prices and get cheaper products.

I still use a 1952 sunbeam two slice toaster and it has only had a cord replaced in its long history and it still does perfect toast... I fear when it dies I will have to replace it with 10 toasters as nothing today seems to be worth a hoot.

Bring back the jobs and make it in America. Will not stop all the problems but will have better control over the products. Washington sent jobs over seas and gave them tax breaks. Another mistake by our politicians
  • smartiepants  •  3 months ago
It is so hard to find anything made in the USA anymore, my husband, married children and I decided that we would only buy things made in America, however it takes forever to find anything. Sometimes we just give up and don't buy anything because if it's made overseas, it's not worth taking home, no matter what the price. You can thank our government for this, made in America is no longer an option.

We keep blaming China for crap. Well they are only building to OUR specs. WE are the problem. US based corporations are designing this crap and telling China what to make it with so that the Corporate CEO's and share holders can make a bigger profit, hide more money in offshore accounts and pay no taxes. And then call themselves Patriots, pontificate about how they want to generate more JOBS JOBS JOBS JOBS and then buy more politicians that support their agenda here in the United States of Greed.
