TD Ameritrade says stock trading slows in April

May 9, 2012

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Online brokerage TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. says it handled fewer stock trades in April, but the amount of client assets it held grew slightly.

Ameritrade said Tuesday that it handled an average of 368,000 trades per day last month. That's down 8 percent from April 2011 and down 3 percent from the previous month.

TD Ameritrade charges fees on the transactions it handles, so fewer trades will hurt the Omaha company's revenue. But it also charges fees based on client assets in certain accounts, so growing assets will help the company.

TD Ameritrade says total client assets it held grew 7 percent between April 2011 and April 2012 to $450.9 billion. The total roughly equal to the March 2012 total.
