CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire -06/06/12)- Tervita Corporation founder and chairman David P. Werklund was awarded an honorary degree, doctor of laws (LLD) from the University of Calgary today for his leadership as an entrepreneur, philanthropist, visionary and his positive impact on the lives of young people.
The honorary degree is the University's highest academic honour, conferred upon individuals who have distinguished themselves from others and who have achieved an exceptional standard of excellence in their chosen field.
"I am truly honoured and humbled to be recognized with this degree," said Werklund, founder of Tervita and the Werklund Foundation. "I have always been inspired by the potential in others. I have spent my career developing environments that empower people to create their own success and I will continue to share my experiences in leadership with the young people who are helping to shape tomorrow's world."
Through the Werklund Foundation, Werklund started Empowering Minds, an initiative that provides students and educators with proven and innovative leadership programs that develop the confidence, motivation and resilience necessary to thrive in today's world.
"Mr. Werklund is a remarkable mentor, not only to the graduates, students and faculty at the University of Calgary, but to all our employees at Tervita," said John Gibson, Tervita president and CEO. "He built our organization from a one rig operation to a thriving and comprehensive environmental and energy solutions company with 4,600 employees and counting. We congratulate him today for receiving this distinguished award."
Beginning his career in 1965 with Shell Canada as a production operator, Mr. Werklund has risen in the oilfield industry to become a trusted industry partner. Early in his career, Mr. Werklund recognized and capitalized on the need to address environmental and waste management issues in the oil and gas exploration industry. He co-founded Concord Well Servicing in 1979 and subsequently CCS Corporation, which has since become Tervita Corporation. In 2006, he was listed as one of Alberta Venture's 50 most influential people in Alberta.
"The University is delighted to recognize Mr. Werklund with an honorary degree for his commitment to leadership, life-long learning, and youth," said Jim Dinning, University of Calgary Chancellor. "In 2010, the University began a partnership with the Werklund Foundation Centre for Youth Leadership Education through the Faculty of Education to develop and implement youth leadership programs. Dave's personal leadership has a significant impact on our community, especially as we set our sights on becoming a top-five Canadian university."
