Texting May Increase 'Cognitive And Moral Shallowness' In Teens

Addiction to texting and tweeting may be making people immoral, shallow and materialistic.

An early draft of a study by Dr. Paul Trapnell at the University of Winnipeg identified a scary correlation between teenagers who text often and feelings of rapid, shallow thought (via WebMD).

When teenagers who texted often — some who claimed to send over 300 texts a day — were asked about the importance of 63 life goals, the results showed a tendency for the young adults to dismiss thoughts of morality, spirituality, knowledge, community and altruism.

Instead, options like wealth, image, eroticism,  power, and fame were positively correlated with texting frequency.

In general, feelings of reflectiveness among people who text often have been on the decline since 2007.

While the researchers say there could be alternate explanations for these statistics, the pattern mirrors Nicholas Carr's "shallowing" theory. Carr's book about how technology shapes the mind first posited the question "Is Google making us stupid?"

Well I would say its the other way around. Shallow people text more, tweet more etc. Its because they can't make and talk to any "real" friends...haha.

True Story - My daughter spent a whole evening with a few girlfriends riding the transit system because one of the girls forgot her cell phone at home and just 'had to have it' (movie plans were canceled). And while they rode to the edge of town, another one admitted she wished she had a bf so she would be seen texting more often by her friends.. Cheash!

"Its" and "I do believe your right"? Hopefully, your daughter doesn't have the punctuation issues you have Donald.

It's insane!! That typo almost feels like it's there on purpose to make a point or something...but if it's an oversight, it totally undermines the message of the whole article...sad.

Sonali makes a great point. I have another view.. My 18 yr old son WAS one of those '300 a day texters' . It drove me crazy, interruptions during breakfast, family time, etc.. But I contained my urge to throw his phone in the garbage because I thought it was a fad as he was one of the last kids in HS to get one. But actually he was 'dating' a new gf and over a few months he got to know her quite well without 'traditional dating' which could have meant utilizing the back seat of a car. In other words, when they did start dating they already knew and respected each other. So that worked out ok. I'm glad I didn't toss his phone. And if he has shallow thinking, it doesn't show as he is holding his own in Engineering.

Incorrect conclusion. The correct conclusion is:

coginitive and moral shallow teens engage in abnormally high texting activity

    - look...I eat, I sleep .... blaaah.

Dont do anything more stupider. Bubbles in Trailer Park Boys
An increase in shallowness implies that teens had some type of depth to lose in the first place. Good one.

Did real scientists conduct this research? Correlation does not equal causation. I'm sure that these "shallow" kids text more, but one is not necessarily due to the other.

Now that will explain why Church Priests, the Pope and all rePUKEs texts all the time. I thought they were just organizing tea parties. Now I stand corrected.............rePUkes are just shallow, materialistic, immoral, lack of knowledge/spirituality and completely devoid of altruism and community work. They especially despise community works as they hate socialism and communism!!

It is without a doubt this generation has no social skills what so ever. They are to perplexed gazing into their techy screens to give a dam about anything.
Heaven forbid they are the ones that will look after us in old age.
We boomers will be in dire straights....

They did a study on the people who did this study and found 100% of them had an agenda before they started the study. They also found that their position on "morality, spirituality, knowledge, community and altruism" were different then that of younger people who text a lot and that they feel they should be given a moral doggy bone app for their iphones and blackberries. This app gives them a different colored doggy bone image every time they successfully feel self righteous about being technologically challenged.
