Summer is a busy travel season and if you have a trip on the horizon, simplify your packing needs with what experts say are the only two pieces of luggage you’ll ever need: a carry-on roller and checked luggage.
Carry-On Top Picks
According to Jennifer Flowers of Travel & Leisure Magazine a lightweight and durable carry-on roller is your most essential piece of luggage, and worth a splurge.
“Carry-on bags get used the most because we take them with us on the majority of our trips. Therefore, it makes sense to purchase a good quality, durable bag from a reputable luggage maker,” she says. “I definitely prefer rollers to duffle bags because the wheels make them super easy to transport.”
Two of Flowers’ favorites include:
- Vapor International by Tumi: It’s extremely light and durable with hard-side casing made from triple layer, high-performance alloy. It’s also got an ultra-modern and sleek design. Retail: $495
- Salsa Air by Rimowa: “It’s a fantastic, state-of-the-art, ultra-lightweight bag made of 100% polycarbonate,” says Flowers. “Like the Tumi bag, it’s got a very durable hard case and it easily fits in the overhead compartment on most domestic flights.” Retail: $495
Checked luggage should have all the qualities of a good carry-on, including strong wheels and a durable body. It should also be as lightweight as possible.
Flowers’ favorites include:
Tegra-Lite Large Trip Packing Case by Tumi: The material is made from Tegris, a revolutionary composite, which is also used in NASCAR racecars. It’s highly durable, light, and easy to move. Retail: $775.
Samsonite HYPERspace: This is a lower-priced checked bag alternative. It measures 30.5” tall and is an expandable Spinner. “While the body is somewhat less durable than the Tegra-Lite, its dual spinner wheels make it a bit easier to manage when pulling over carpeted areas,” says Flowers. The interior of the bag includes a wet pack, mesh pockets and a hanging toiletry kit for additional storage. Also, its padded top and side carry handle provide comfort when lifting a fully packed case. Retail: $243
While the pieces carry some pretty steep price tags, keep in mind you can find great deals online. Flash sales sites, like Gilt.com, sometimes host great sales – including deals on Tumi luggage – up to 50 percent off. Also, sites like ebags.com and Zappos.com offer a variety of high-end luggage at competitive prices.
