Today's Students Need to Focus on 'Real Skills'

Marketwired

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Aug 19, 2014) - With a looming shortage of skilled workers expected to hit the B.C. job market as early as 2016, it's never been more important for job-seekers to acquire the specific skills and focused training to be career-ready as quickly as possible.

"The top employers in B.C.'s most in-demand industries no longer have the luxury of going through a lengthy training process with new hires," says Larry Heinzlmeir, vice-president of CDI College. "What they need are employees who already have the real skills and experience to hit the ground running. Those are the people who are going to land jobs in B.C.'s fastest-growing career fields."

One of Canada's leading career-training providers for more than 40 years, CDI College does just that. Its graduates typically find work in their field of study within six months of graduating, a fact Heinzlmeir largely attributes to CDI College's close relationships with the industries it serves.

"We develop our curricula based on the recommendations of advisory boards made up of key employers," he explains. "We're continually asking what employers need, and as those needs evolve so do our programs.

"Because our programs are so focused," he adds, "many of them can be completed in less than 12 months. That means the skills our students learn are still very relevant when they graduate."

To further improve its students' career prospects, CDI College focuses on hands-on learning and small class sizes, and it ensures that all of its instructors are actually experienced professionals who know firsthand what it takes to succeed in their industry. Perhaps most importantly, many CDI College programs include an on-the-job practicum placement, so students graduate with the real work experience today's employers demand.

"Employers don't just want to know what you know," says Heinzlmeir. "They want to see what you can do. A lot of our students are hired right away by their practicum employer because they've already demonstrated that they can apply their skills in the workplace."

CDI College has 26 campuses across Canada and offers more than 50 programs in business, healthcare, early childhood education, art & design, legal studies and technology.

The National Open House will be held on August 21, 2014 from 6-8pm at each CDI College campus. Check-in at 5:30pm sharp. For more information or to RSVP, visit www.openhouse.cdicollege.ca or call 1.877.404.4353
