The automaker said it sold 9.748 mil in '12, above its estimates for 9.7 mil vehicles. It was already clear Toyota had dethroned General Motors Co. (GM), as the Detroit-based automaker fell short, selling 9.29 mil vehicles. General Motors had been the top-selling automaker for 70 years before Toyota took the lead in '08. Shares fell 1.4%.
