Trimble Buys Telog Instruments to Boost Water Management

Trimble Navigation Ltd. TRMB, an original equipment manufacturer of positioning, surveying and machine control products, recently acquired privately held Telog Instruments, Inc. The financial details of the deal have been kept under wraps.

Based in New York, Telog provides wireless remote monitoring system to enable wastewater collection system operators to optimize water usage. Telog’s wireless monitors help to automatically collect and share data from remote equipment such as flowmeters, rain gauges, surcharge sensors, pre-treatment water quality sensors, lift stations and pressure sensors.

These solutions are used by water and energy utilities to monitor flow rates, reservoir and tank levels, water quality, well and groundwater levels, pump station performance, hydrant and valve pressure and sewer overflows, among other metrics across North America. These solutions help to improve sustainability and water conservation by reducing leakage and non-revenue water.

The acquisition, effective immediately, will extend Trimble’s capabilities in serving customers in the water management space. Telog’s suite of advanced water management technology and productivity products along with Trimble’s smart water management solutions will help consumers utilize and manage water in the best possible way.

Trimble has an aggressive merger and acquisition strategy. The company has acquired many companies so far this year that serve various business models. On Sep 2, Trimble acquired Vianova Systems AS, a developer of advanced BIM technology for the civil engineering market and infrastructure lifecycle management. In March, the company took over Finland-based Fifth Element to expand its forestry presence in Northern Europe. These acquisitions have enhanced the company’s product line-up and revenues.

Trimble’s third-quarter 2015 revenues came in at $562.3 million, down 4% sequentially and 3.8% year over year. Persistent poor conditions in the agriculture market, oil price decline and lower agriculture revenues continue to negatively impact revenues. However, growth from acquisitions and divestitures of approximately 1% partially made up for the decline.

Other Stocks to Consider

Currently, Trimble has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). Other stocks that are performing well at the current levels are Mistras Group, Inc. MG, GigOptix, Inc. GIG and Kopin Corporation Inc. KOPN. Mistras Group and GigOptix sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), while Kopin Corporation carries the same Zacks Rank as Trimble.
