Twitter Launches "Moments"

Twitter TWTR officially launched its new “Moments” feature today, allowing users to follow events in real-time through content curated by a team of the company’s editors. This new feature comes on the heels of the struggling social media outlet’s decision to bring back cofounder Jack Dorsey as its permanent CEO.

Twitter users can access the new mode through a lightning bolt icon alongside their notifications and messages (Twitter had previously referred to Moments as “Project Lightning). Opening the feature brings up a feed of tweets, pictures, and videos following breaking news, sporting events, and popular culture.

Moments is a simplified way to find the best or most relevant content on Twitter. Because users pick the handles that they follow, they may be presented with only a certain perspective, and digging through hashtags and trending topics is often difficult. With Moments, a team from Twitter does that work for you.

While Moments is certainly an attempt to make the Twitter experience better for current users, it’s also an effort to rope in new users who find the site too confusing or unnecessary. Other social media sites have already launched similar features, and many have been quick to point out that Moments is very similar to Snapchat’s Story and Discovery modes.

“Currently, the product makes people do a lot of work to realize the value,” said Dorsey.

Users aren’t the only ones who need to find the value in Twitter, as investors have desperately been searching for any value in the company’s stock lately. TWTR is down over 30% on the year, and many investors were frustrated by an unusually long search for a new CEO that ultimately landed on Dorsey, who was already serving as interim CEO and will also continue to run his new payment company Square.

In short, Twitter needs to improve quickly. Twitter investors will be hoping that Moments is there first step in the right direction.
