The U.S. Cities With the Highest Incomes

The U.S. Census Bureau last week released the 2012 American Community Survey results, providing a wealth of data about the country’s towns, states, regions and the people who live there.

Using the bureau’s American Fact Finder tool, we searched the median income data of the nation’s metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas. Of the 2,120 areas included in the report, 10 reported a median household income of more than $69,000 a year.

Income can be a major factor in the lending process. When applying for a home loan, for example, your debt-to-income ratio is one of the most important statistics lenders look at, along with your credit score.

The geographic diversity of the list is quite interesting. Three of the cities are in California, while Hawaiian and Alaskan cities also made the list. The other five areas are on the East Coast. In addition to the median income, we listed the 2011 population estimates, the most recent available for these statistical areas.
