Unemployment aid applications drop to 9-month low

Unemployment benefit applications fall to 9-month low, latest sign of improving job market

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in nine months, that latest evidence that the job market is improving.

The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications dropped by 23,000 to a seasonally adjusted 381,000. That's the lowest number of applications since late February.

The four-week average, a less volatile measure, fell for the ninth time in 11 weeks to 393,250. That's the lowest average since early April. Applications that drop below 375,000 — consistently — tend to correlate with a steady decline in the unemployment rate.

"There have been numerous indications that the labor market is healing and today's jobless claims report only reinforces that view," Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG, a trading firm.

The unemployment rate fell to 8.6 percent in November, the government said last week, down from 9 percent the previous month. That's the lowest rate in two and a half years.

Still, the unemployment rate dropped last month in part because more people gave up looking for work. Once the unemployed stop looking for jobs and drop out of the work force, they are no longer counted as unemployed.

Employers added a net total of 120,000 jobs last month. The economy has generated 100,000 or more jobs five months in a row — the first time that has happened since April 2006.

The report on hiring gains followed other positive signs. Manufacturing firms are boosting output and retailers reported a strong start to the holiday shopping season. Consumer confidence jumped in November to the highest level since July, and Americans' pay rose in October by the most in seven months.

Many economists expect growth to accelerate in the final three months of the year, to about a 3 percent annual rate. That would be an improvement from 2 percent growth in the July-September period.

But the U.S. economy is vulnerable to shocks from overseas. European leaders are struggling to contain a two-year old debt crisis and the 17 nations that use the euro may already be in recession, economists say.

That could slow U.S. exports and cut into overseas profits earned by U.S. multinationals. Even worse, the crisis could force European banks to cut back on lending and U.S. banks to follow suit, leading to a credit crunch. Most economists are penciling in slower U.S. growth next year, partly because of Europe's slowdown.

Fewer people are receiving unemployment benefits, and the number of people on extended benefits also fell. Some of that decline is because those out of work found jobs. But economists think most have likely used up all their benefits.

The number of people receiving benefits fell by 174,000 to 3.58 million. But that doesn't include several million people receiving aid under extended programs put in place during the recession. All told, 6.6 million people received unemployment aid in the week ending Nov. 19, the latest data available. That's about 400,000 fewer than the previous week.

Congress is debating whether to continue the extended benefit program, which expires at the end of this year. The program provides up to 99 weeks of benefits in states with high unemployment rates. If the program isn't continued, the Labor Department estimates that about 1.8 million people could lose benefits by early February.

The unemployed have run out of benefits, that's why the number of people applying for benefits is down. Companies have laid off all they can lay off and still function. The Gov't needs to find out the number of people who are out of work and out of benefits and they will find out that more people than ever are out of work.

Extend the benefits and see what happens to that 8.6 unemployment rate.

Reason No.1. Seasonal hirings. The stores need more people for the holiday rush. Then they're screwed later when the rush is over.

Reason No.2. The end of unemployment benefits for lots of people.

Reason No.3. People have gotten tired of our Governments lies and have gone off on their own.

very true, Seasonal hiring does help, but alot of people just are not going to screw with it during this time of year, wait till Jan 2nd. The numbers will go back up quickly, UPS always hires this time of year but lays them off right after the rush. so does every major retailer.

To Quote "The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications dropped by 23,000 to a seasonally adjusted 381,000. That's the lowest number of applications since late February. "

What part of seasonally adjusted confused you about seasonal hirings?

#2 - What part of "The number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in nine months, that latest evidence that the job market is improving. " confused you about the difference between NEW filings and a remark about people that have used all their benefits up?

With Cain out of the race there's room for another idiot up on the republican debate stage and you sure are proving that you're enough of an idiot to be up there.

With so many Americans that are unemployed and add homeless and on welfare, wouldn’t it make more sense to give them priority and have the government give incentives or tax breaks to get them employed again. Alabama is looking into giving prisinors farm work because of the shortage. We continue to spend $$ in the billions on prisoners and yet decent Americans that can’t find jobs still sit hopeless. There is a lot of “talk” about fair wages. I guess with the high unemployment rate, paying them welfare instead of taking what is available whether fair wage or not makes sense (get the point?). Paying supposedly fair wages (which is independent to each individual) will mean raising prices and again with so many unemployed Americans will they be able to afford food at triple the price?. Wow can’t wait to see the economy continue to go to #$%$

This article is complete garbage. The real story is that there are thousands of people that are out of a job and can no longer draw unemployment benefits, so they are no longer counted as unemployed. The news media should be talking about the Obama administrations responsiblity for the worst employment disaster this country has ever seen.
    • Tarue 5 months ago
You mean Bush's responsibility. The economy collapsed when Bush was in office making deals for all those banks that sold the sub-prime mortgages. Bush later bailed them out, but left the unemployed taxpayers high and dry. At least Obama was able to catch the terrorist that eluded the incompetent Bush/Cheney team for 8 years (and attacked our nation on Bush's watch, while he poured millions into unnecessary wars that killed too many innocent victims).

  • Steve  •  5 months ago
That is only because a lot of peoples unemployment is running out.
    • Choey 5 months ago
Steve - You may want to re-read the article. This is the number of NEW people applying for unemployment that has dropped. It has nothing to do with benefits running out on previous claims.

Happy #$%$ for the masses. There are no jobs! I posted a job for an entry level (low pay) PR position recently and got two hundred resumes with weeks. All of them college grads and most trying to make ends meet by "working" odd jobs. I guess they are technically "employed", aren't they and don't show up in the figures.

Hey John, I'm sure that I'm not even remotely qualified for that job position, but do you still have an opening? I'm 52, and have been looking for work in the job market for the technical skills that I possess for over 2 1/2 years now. And I can guarantee that I have more financial obligations than some "fresh-out-of-college" graduate!

More propaganda... there are no new applications because we've all used our 90 days of benefits. Things are far worse then they say.
  • Lee C  •  5 months ago
This is misleading, most of these people have had their unemployment capped out, so they cannot file for benefits anymore.
  • Unaffiliated  •  5 months ago
Another bogus AP story - The economy needs 150K new jobs per month to just cover new entrants (College Grads). The UI rate has gone down because peoples benefits have run out.
The current administration and Congress are only focused on the 2012 election - nothing will happen between now and then to substantially improve hiring. Employers don't know what a new hire will cost them given the backlog of pending social legislation and they will find other ways to operate their business.

From my observations the job market is worse, not better. Yes there was some holiday hiring, but these are temporary jobs as January unemployment numbers will show. Our government and big corporate has handed over the bread and butter middle class manufacturing jobs to China and Mexico. The situation will not improve unless something is done to get these jobs back. If this does not happen the middle class is screwed and will join the poor in the bread lines forever.

Basshohaoohawohahoeho.....the unemployment rate FELL even though YOUR story tells us it should NOT have fallen.....jobless claims have never dropped below you 375,000 level....which used to be 350,000, by the way. Unemployment FELL because 350,000 poor souls STOPPED LOOKING FOR WORK last month alone......
