Universities should go back to being about intellectual pursuit. Trade schools and apprenticeships should make a comeback for teaching skills for a job or career. Intellectual pursuit and career training aren't the same thing, the venue for reaching them shouldn't be the same, and the attempt to conflate the two has led to the decline of both.

Nothing like walking around with a Bachelor's Degree and not being able to find ANY work whatsoever. Since I keep getting laid off from the education sector, I am trying to get into medical assisting or administrative assisting. However, the hospitals and doctors offices won't even look at you if you have not worked in a medical office (even though I have all the skills required for clerical and office and am trainable). Then you have the lovely state of NY and DOL and Government who will NOT even help me with taking classes (because I have a bachelor's degree). I am trying in every way possible to find work (any) at this point because I have two kids I'm supporting on my own...and I refuse to fail, I want to work, I want a chance to show these medical offices, hospitals or anyone lucky enough to hire me that I am worth the opportunity!

The education system in America is a scam; especially when it relates to law school. Outsourcing has killed us, and America will never be the same because of it. I see a dire future for America in the years to come.....

American Colleges are nothing more than a business, and turning this nations young out into the world with 50k in student loan debt is an absolute crime..

the problem with america is that you are pressured into getting as many degrees as possible to give u an edge over other applicants. By the time you are finished with school, you have a mound of debt and all of those so called high paying jobs you were promised just arent there. I have a masters in education and it was the worst thing i ever did. I just took a job managing a lumber company that pays very well. The only problem is that I could have had this job before I earned 2 college degrees and put myself in the hole financially.

I know somebody with a degree in accounting and is currently working as a cashier at Walmart. The job crisis is effecting everyone.

EXCESSIVELY HIGH STUDENT LOANS FOR CAREERS THAT AREN'T THERE.

It's been soaring for 3 years now.....the rate just goes down because people have exhausted their benefits, not because they got jobs !

When I was growing up everyone always preached "If you don't want to flip burgers all your life, you need to go to college!" So I graduated college $30,000 in debt. Now those same people are calling me a self entitled snob because I don’t want to work flipping burgers!

The USA has to return to making things again. Because of greed, taxes and unfriendly business policies companies took all the manufacturing jobs overseas for the cheap labor. That was the backbone of America. We have to find a way to return these solid, decent paying jobs back to the USA or things are only going to get worse. We haven't seen anything yet.

US schools need to update the course selections and degree programs to be more in line with our economy. Programs such as Fry Cook in the Fast Food Industry, Understanding Broken English assembly Instructions, Door Greeting 101, and How to Operate a Hobart Dishwasher just to name a few. These type of studies should produce better unemployment numbers and prepare the young graduates to take advantage of the wonderful benefits of the global economy.

Universities/colleges also inflate students' attitudes about their worth. My ex-daughter-in-law has a master's degree in public health and has never worked a day in her life because she came out of school assured that she would be able to walk into a position making at least 60k a year. Most of the jobs pay pretty well at 35-38k a year but she won't even apply for them because she is "worth more." Someone needs to teach these kids that they are only worth what the job pays...

I've worked in college admissions for many years and I can tell you that Criminal Justice is the all time worthless degree out there. Those graduates can't even get rent-a-cop jobs at a mall after they graduate. Why? Because there is such a glut of students who were raised on CSI type shows and are deluded into thinking it is some kind of glamour#$%$ career choice. Too may kids going into it without even knowing what it really entails.

Not that I'm a perfect writer, far from, just sometimes I wish the execution was better on these things.

A friend's daughter has a degree in Psychology..worked as a CPS officer for 2 years before illegally fired for seeking mental health help for all the things she had to witness and endure in those 24 months...Her therapist told her to take a leave of absence and recouperate before going back into the cesspool of her job and he would give her the papers she needed to file so she had a legitamate medical problem...Her supervisor fired her the day she put in for the medical leave saying she was mentally incompetent to perform her duties, even though her work load had more than quadrupled from the time she began working for the state of Texas. The turnover rate and burnout time has put the Department of Child Protective Services into a backload of over 3 months and overloading the poor souls having to pick up the slack. Her $50.000 degree got her a job that gave her ulcers and nightmares. She now works as a waitress making 1/3 of her pay as a state employee, with no benefits.
