Transplace, a leading provider of transportation management services and logistics technology, kicked off its 11th annual Shipper Symposium in Dallas on Tuesday with headline speaker United States Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. Transplace’s signature event brought together a broad range of industry experts, academics, analysts and Transplace customers to share key insights and strategies for addressing current supply chain and economic challenges.
“For over a decade, the Shipper Symposium has brought together supply chain visionaries and academic leaders to address the latest industry trends and issues effecting shippers, and share strategies and best practices for improving transparency and efficiency within their operations,” said Transplace President George Abernathy. “This year’s event features a diverse and accomplished group of speakers that bring extensive knowledge and experience to share with our customers and partners to help them prosper in today’s market.”
- What to Expect from Washington in 2013 – and Beyond – Senator Hutchison shared an insider’s perspective on current challenges and how the country must respond to them. She addressed issues such as the national economy, homeland defense and foreign affairs, and offered valuable insights as to how these issues will play out in Congress this year, and what that means for individuals and organizations. During her presentation, Senator Hutchison stated, “Congress is having a hard time getting things done and its approval rating recently hit an all-time low. That’s because we’re in an economic slump with poor recovery and too many taxes. Some say we need to increase the role of government, but what we really need to do is grow the private sector. Small business is the economic engine of America and what will get our economy growing again, but regulations are stifling us. Entrepreneurship and creativity is what helped build our country and what we will continue to do if the government would get out of the way.”
- Creating Value through Co-loading – Transplace Senior Vice President, Consulting & Engineering Ben Cubitt joined representatives from Colgate-Palmolive, Clorox and Del Monte Foods to discuss how this group of consumer goods companies used a 3PL to plan and implement a successful collaborative logistics program to reduce miles, save money and improve sustainable business practices for overall value. The panel expressed how their respective companies have all done network studies, run freight bids and converted long haul freight to intermodal to reduce transportation costs, and are now looking outside their four walls to partner with other manufacturers and providers to find a game changing way to benefit their companies, our customers and their customers.
Today, Director of the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics Dr. Yossi Sheffi will discuss the phenomenon of logistics clusters – geographically concentrated sets of logistics-related business activities – and why Memphis, Singapore, Chicago and scores of other locations have been successful in developing such clusters while others have not.
On Thursday, May 9, Del Monte Foods Chief Operating Officer Nils Lommerin will highlight how the 115-year old business has remained a leading consumer packaged goods company by paying attention to consumer purchasing habits and setting a new path of success and value for its customers. Former CNBC Chief Economist, Marci Rossell, PhD will conclude the event by examining the post-financial crisis economic landscape and what it means for the business community.
