United Technologies to be Penn State Corporate Partner

United Technologies, Corp (UTX) recently announced that Pennsylvania State University has selected it as the corporate partner for the year 2014. The award is based on the company’s contribution to the progress and support of the university and hence the recognition comes as a prestigious achievement for United Technologies.

Since 1990, United Technologies and its Pratt & Whitney unit have sponsored over $17.8 million in research at Pennsylvania University, covering a wide range of projects across different departments. Over the years, United Technologies has established a strong partnership with Pennsylvania University in the fields of student programs and facilities development, research support and innovative technology development. Also, United Technologies has provided support for the Engineering Ambassadors program – a professional program in which the university students inspire young people to consider careers in engineering.

The students have access to a center of excellence build by Pratt & Whitney, which sponsors research into areas such as gas turbine engines, acoustics and advanced materials. It also has a Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine (:START) laboratory in which Pratt & Whitney was an investment partner. The university has a threefold objective of effective teaching, research and public service. United Technologies’ being the corporate partner is likely to help the university meet its objectives in an effective manner.

United Technologies provides high-end technology products and services to building systems and aerospace industries worldwide. This diversified business conglomerate serves various end markets such as aerospace, defense and commercial construction. The business diversification allows the company to remain profitable during tough economic times.

United Technologies currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Other stocks that look promising and are worth a look include Carlisle Companies Incorporated (CSL), Federal Signal Corp (FSS) and Noble Group Limited (NOBGY), each carrying a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
