Veeco Instruments Inc. (VECO) announced today that the University of Waterloo, located at the heart of Canada’s technology hub, has purchased a GEN10® Molecular Beam Epitaxy system for its recently opened Quantum-Nano Centre (QNC) hosting the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN) and the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC). The system will be installed in the new MBE laboratory being established by Professor Zbig Wasilewski, Endowed Nanotechnology Chair at WIN.
According to Professor Wasilewski, “MBE technology is rich in its application across several fields of study that we are focusing on here at WIN and IQC. After thorough evaluation, we thought the GEN10 was the best choice due to its flexible cluster architecture, system design details, full automation and relatively small footprint. It ideally fits our needs across many research frontiers. Also, given the importance of effusion cells to our research, we thought Veeco would be a great choice given their expertise and our history with their cells.”

The Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Centre opened in the fall of 2012. The QNC is dedicated to allowing faculty and students to pursue quantum information and nanotechnology research at the highest level. Shared between the Institute of Quantum Computing and the Waterloo Institute of Nanotechnology, the building fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration in its many common areas, lounges and meeting rooms.
