GENEVA (AP) -- The top U.S. trade official says China's new import duties on some U.S.-made vehicles are part of a "disturbing trend" by Beijing at the World Trade Organization.
But the Ron Kirk, the U.S. Trade Representative, refrained from claiming outright that the measures were illegal under WTO rules.
His comments Friday in Geneva come a day after his Chinese counterpart defended the tariffs, which range from 2 percent to 21.5 percent.
Kirk told The Associated Press that there is still much China could do to comply with WTO rules 10 years after it joined the trade body.
The two countries have clashed recently over tariffs on U.S. chicken imports and Chinese subsidies for wind power equipment.
