US Market Indexes Higher on Tuesday

U.S. market indexes were higher on Monday with gains slowed by uncertainty from a potential OPEC agreement. For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 19121.60 for a gain of 23.70 points or 0.12%. The S&P 500 closed at 2204.66 for a gain of 2.94 points or 0.13%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 5379.92 for a gain of 11.11 points or 0.21%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower for the day at 12.91 with a loss of -0.24 points or -1.83%.


Tuesday's market movers

Market trading was affected by economic reports on GDP and corporate profits. The second estimate of third quarter GDP showed a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 3.2%, an increase from the first estimate of 2.9%. The preliminary estimate for annual growth in corporate profits for the third quarter was 5.2%, an increase from the previous quarter's -1.7%.

Other market data reported on Tuesday included the S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index and the Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index. The S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index reported a monthly increase of 0.4%, even with consensus of 0.4% and above the previous month's 0.3%. The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index was higher at 107.1, beating consensus of 101.0 and above the previous month's report of 100.8.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains for the day:

UnitedHealth (UNH) 3.60%

Boeing (BA) 1.25%

Pfizer (PFE) 1.20%

Top sectors for the broad market were real estate and health care. Technology was also higher with the S&P 500 technology sector gaining 0.06% for the day.

Small-Cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1328.22 for a loss of -1.61 points or -0.12%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 814.42 for a loss of -0.68 points or -0.08%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 7876.81 for a loss of -10.84 points or -0.14%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9374.93 for a loss of -2.69 points or -0.03%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1631.11 for a gain of 2.43 points or 0.15%; the S&P 100 Index at 971.99 for a gain of 1.26 points or 0.13%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1311.74 for a gain of 1.43 points or 0.11%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1223.71 for a gain of 1.58 points or 0.13%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 626.38 for a gain of 0.30 points or 0.05%.
