US optimistic on trade talks with Europe

US negotiator says he is optimistic on trade deal with Europe as first round of talks close

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The chief U.S. trade negotiator says he is optimistic about a deal with Europe on a sweeping free trade pact as the first round of talks draws to a close.

Daniel Mullaney and his European counterpart Ignacio Garcia-Bercero told a news conference Friday that some of the most difficult issues emerging in the first round of trade negotiations revolve around removing regulatory barriers to trade. The first round of trade talks began Monday and ends on Friday.

The two economic powerhouses aim to seal a free trade agreement that will remove most tariffs and other trade barriers between the two continents, aiming to boost jobs and growth.
