DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing $1 million loans to two organizations in Iowa to support rural communities.
The money comes from the USDA's Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant program which is designed to strengthen the rural economy by supporting small businesses, improving public facilities, and creating jobs.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced recipients on Wednesday.
Interstate 35 Telephone Co. which does business as Interstate Communications will get $1 million loan to build a telephone distribution facility. The company provides telephone and Internet service to several communities in southern Iowa.
Central Iowa Power Cooperative was approved for a $1 million loan to build a dormitory for students at Southwestern Community College in Creston.
The projects were among several grants and loans approved for projects in 11 states.
