CAREER: Joined Vanguard in 1991 as assistant to then-Chairman John Bogle, the company founder and index mutual fund pioneer. Held various leadership positions within Vanguard's planning, retail investor and online services groups. From 2001 to 2006, served as chief information officer and head of information technology. Became head of Vanguard's retail investor group in 2006, and chief investment officer in 2013 with the retirement of former CIO George "Gus" Sauter.

PERSONAL: Current chairman of the board of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "It's all about giving kids back their childhood, which is a magical thing," he says. "So I volunteer."

HOBBY: An avid bicyclist, Buckley joins Vanguard colleagues on group rides starting at 5 a.m. during the summer. "If I have to blow off steam, you'll find me out on my bike," he says. "I don't have the choice to run. My knees are gone, so bicycling is better."

BEST INVESTMENT ADVICE: "Pay yourself first. Jack Brennan (a former Vanguard CEO) said, 'Make that payroll deduction into your 401(k) and don't even think about it. Pretend you didn't even get paid that money that you deducted.' I started doing that early in my career. Develop a habit of putting money away and just avoid the noise. Don't react to short-term gyrations in the market and what's in the news."
