Verizon pushed a carrier update to iPhone 5 owners last night that fixes an issue where the phones would use carrier data while still connected to Wi-Fi.
There are a few discussion boards on Apple's website that show people complaining their cellular data usage has gone way up since buying the iPhone 5, even though they were connected to Wi-Fi.
It's unclear how much data was leaking, but Verizon has issued a statement to The Loop saying customers will not be charged:
Under certain circumstances, iPhone 5 may use Verizon cellular data while the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. Apple has a fix that is being delivered to Verizon customers right on their iPhone 5. Verizon Wireless customers will not be charged for any unwarranted cellular data usage.
If you have a Verizon iPhone 5, you likely received a notification that the update is ready. To install it, simple turn your phone off and turn it on again. If you want to make sure you have the correct carrier software after you restart, go to Settings > General > About and make sure you see "Verizon 13.1" in the carrier field.
Those of you worried about your data usage should call Verizon to confirm you won't be charged.
Last week, we learned that several iPhone and iPad users were having difficulty connecting to Wi-Fi after upgrading to Apple's new operating iOS 6. It's unclear whether or not the issues are related. It's also unclear if the same bug that affected Verizon iPhone 5s also affect iPhones on Sprint and AT&T.
Apple has not responded to a request for comment.
