Vertex drug gets Europe OK

The European Commission approved Vertex Pharmaceuticals' (VRTX) Kalydeco as a treatment for cystic fibrosis, a chronic disease that can impair the lungs. It received U.S. approval in Jan. But the drug has caused some headaches for investors. The stock soared in May on Kalydeco's clinical trial data but then tumbled a few weeks later after Vertex restated some of the numbers. More data released at the end of June caused further confusion and another dip in the stock. Shares rose 0.5% to 49.32.
