RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia officials are seeking comment on a plan for passenger and freight rail transportation in Virginia through 2040.

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation has released a draft of its 2013 Virginia Statewide Rail Plan.

Department director Thelma Drake says the plan provides a vision that will help guide Virginia toward meeting its transportation goal of moving people and goods efficiently and effectively.

The plan profiles the state's current rail assets, services and capacity chokepoints. It also outlines recommended improvement projects.
