RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- New data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that men continue to earn more money than woman in Virginia.
The survey released Tuesday shows the full-time wages of Virginia women were 80.5 percent of what men earned in 2011, up 5.3 percentage points from the year before.
In basic terms, that means that in 2011, a woman earned just over 80 cents for every dollar earned by a man.
Nationally, women earned 82.2 percent of what men earned in 2011. The ratio of female-to-male earnings in 2011 varied from 68.7 percent in Louisiana to 89.9 percent in California.
Officials say the numbers in Virginia have fluctuated considerably since 1997, ranging from a low of 72.4 percent in 2000 to a high of 81.7 percent on 2002.
