The VIX rose yesterday as the S&P 500 slipped, but closed off its highs.
The volatility index ended the day up 0.85 or 5.6 percent to 15.96. It peaked at 16.45 when the S&P 500 fell near 1400, but then eased. The SPX finished just above its lows at 1402, down 11 points in the session.
VIX futures also rose, but lagged the gains in the spot VIX, causing the premium gap narrowed slightly. The September and October futures both inched higher by 0.03, closing at 19.3 and 21.55, respectively.
More than 320,000 VIX options traded, 202,000 of which were calls. The VXX has 170,000 options changing hands, including 106,000 calls.
