British telecom major Vodafone Group plc (VOD) has signed an exclusive deal with Samsung Electronics Co. to sell the gold coloured Galaxy S5 smartphone from the latter after its U.K. launch. The device is expected to hit the stores on Apr 11.
Notably, S5, will be the latest high-end smartphone from Samsung’s Galaxy series, whose previous editions have achieved considerable success in the past. The smartphone is available in three other colour options like Shimmering White, Charcoal Black and Electric Blue and will be available for pre-orders from March 28.
The gold Galaxy S5 tagged as GS5 will be exclusively available from Vodafone stores in the U.K. for a period of one month. After that the handset will be available from other peer networks. However, the pricing of the phone is yet to be decided.
Samsung S5 has added some unique features over its predecessor S4, including a heart rate sensor and a fingerprint scanner. The latest smartphone is waterproof and is loaded with Google Inc.’s (GOOG) latest Android offering KitKat.
Although the gold used in the phone is just a tinted metal, gold coloured smartphones have recently seen wide acceptance. The gold version of Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone 5s is a huge hit straightaway. Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC has also come up with a limited gold edition of its flagship smartphone HTC One.
The exclusivity deal will allow Vodafone to tap the high-end customers at the initial stage of the launch. However, the success of S5 with Vodafone will depend on sales of the other versions of the smartphone.
Vodafone currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). A better-ranked stock in this sector is Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) SK Telecom Co Limited (SKM).
