Vons president retiring

PLEASANTON, Calif. (AP) -- Grocery store operator Safeway Inc. announced Friday that the head of its Vons grocery chain is retiring.

Tom Keller has been president of Vons since 1999 and worked for Safeway for more than 30 years in various capacities and has been in the industry since 1972.

After Keller retires on Feb. 1, Gary Rocheleau, the company's vice president of retail merchandising execution, will temporarily take over his duties.

Shares of Safeway, which is based in Pleasanton, Calif., and runs stores nationwide, rose 2 cents to close at $21.85.
