S&W Seed (Nasdaq-small:SANW) has selected five dormant alfalfa varieties to test at four sites in China. The varieties selected include some developed internally as well as some developed by companies that S&W Seed has acquired. The trials should start in early August, 2013 in the (cooler) northern parts of the PRC where most of the current alfalfa crop is grown.
The company intends to develop distribution networks in the PRC, working with established companies in China. Alfalfa is currently imported into China to meet the demand for high quality feed needed to improve the quantity and quality of milk.
The move to establish a presence in the PRC follows the development of a new strain of alfalfa for tropical regions. China has all climes and, in total, could be the largest market and fastest growing market in the world.
