BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is offering holders of its gift cards, credit cards and prepaid debit cards a discount on gasoline of up to 15 cents a gallon until Dec. 24 as the world's largest retailer looks to lure customers worried about higher pump prices and a tough economy.

The program, which starts Friday, will offer shoppers using a Wal-Mart gift card a 10-cents-per-gallon discount. Those who use a Wal-Mart MoneyCard or Wal-Mart credit card will save 15 cents per gallon. The discounts will be available at more than 1,000 Murphy USA and Wal-Mart gas stations in 20 states.

Last summer, Wal-Mart offered customers including those who paid with its branded credit or money cards a 10-cents-per-gallon discount.

Gas prices, which had fallen from a peak of $3.94 in early April, have been surging again in recent weeks. As of Wednesday, the national average for a gallon of gasoline was $3.756 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service.
