NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT - News) plans to start selling a new single-serve beverage maker, according to an analyst report on Thursday, sending shares of rival coffee system maker Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc (NasdaqGS:GMCR - News) down more than 4 percent.

The introduction of the Esio Beverage System, with its relatively inexpensive drinks, could pressure the price that Green Mountain, the dominant player in the U.S. single-serve coffee market, can charge for its K-Cups, which are the portions of coffee used in its brewers, the report said.

Wal-Mart, the world's biggest retailer, has plans to begin selling the Esio System, which can make single servings of hot and cold drinks including coffee, tea, energy drinks and vitamin waters, according to a report by research firm Detwiler Fenton.

That machine's presence at Walmart stores would provide more competition for Keurig as well as for Kraft Foods Inc's (NYSE:KFT - News) Tassimo and Nestle's (VTX:NESN.VX - News) Nescafe Dolce Gusto, the report said.

Prices per serving are expected to be much lower than the average cost of Keurig's K-Cups, which range from 60 cents to 90 cents each, the report said.

"We believe that this introduction will likely be a game changer in the single-serve category," Detwiler said in the report, adding that Walmart had been frustrated with Green Mountain's pricing, which was considered too high for the Walmart consumer.

"We see this introduction as fulfilling Walmart's goal of offering a competitive value option," the report said.

Officials at Wal-Mart, Green Mountain and Esio were not immediately available to comment.

News of the report was first mentioned by a CNBC business news correspondent.

Green Mountain's shares were down 4 percent at $49.17 on the Nasdaq on Thursday afternoon. Shares of Sodastream International (NasdaqGS:SODA - News), which also makes home beverage machines, were down 3 percent at $37.23.

Who is buying these single serve coffeemakers?! I don't know anybody that has one. For 60 to 90 cents per cup, you can buy 2lbs of coffee for $10 and make 90 cups. And those soda machines aren't any better, you can buy a 2 liter bottle for $1.

When I was a kid my dad had a percolator and it made lousy coffee but it smelled great in the morning and we liked it. Now get off my lawn.

Is it that friggin' hard to make a cup of coffee at home? You heat the water on the stove and pour it over cone filter. The whole process takes a few minutes, costs about 25 cents per cup, and tastes better than what any machine can produce. And, not that I am the world's biggest environmentalist, but those single serving containers can't be a good idea.

Pour a coffee pot of water into a holding chamber that already has hot water in which releases though a filter with a 90 cent packet of coffee and in less than 5 minutes you have an eight cup pot of freshly brewed coffee @12 1/2 cents per cup - WOW and you want to keep Wally world going with these kind of dramatics.

Companies that charge outrageous prices for single serve items that only upper class will afford, Walmart is just playing a balance act. Just like Unions, without unions companies could get away paying for nothing and a small wage, the Non union companies pay well and offer great benifits to keep the union out. Semiconductor companies are a great example of this. So if walmart wants to make an item that costs less, then Keurig and others will have to lower prices to compete. I am not a Walmart fan, but some things they do are great.

The choice widens from two to three Chinese manufactured single serve coffee systems. Lately, not only has competition been good for the consumer; it has been positively great for the Chinese manufacturers.
Make that four. The article failed to mention the Pod machines.
