Wal-Mart's Reply to Amazon Prime Day: Sale for All on July 15 - Analyst Blog

The retail world is about to witness a major tussle as market leaders Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. WMT and Amazon.com Inc. AMZN cross swords on Jul 15.

Last week, Amazon announced its decision to offer huge deals on Jul 15 — Prime Day — to mark the 20th anniversary of launching its website. Reportedly, Wal-Mart will launch a rival sales campaign the same day. The offers will be available to all customers irrespective of any membership. The rival sale campaign will include 2,000 online discount deals, which will last for 90 days.

Amazon’s discounted deals will be available across several categories, especially electronics, toys, video games, movies, clothing, patio, lawn and garden, and sports and outdoor items. However, only the Prime Members are entitled to the sale. The Prime members have to pay $99 a year for the service against which they will receive free two-day shipping and access to video streaming and music.

The largest retail giant for years, Wal-Mart’s empire is recently being threatened by online retailer Amazon, the leading e-Commerce player. Determined to fight back, the Zacks Rank #4 (Sell) company announced a rival sales campaign the same day for all customers, unlike Amazon.

It is raining discounts during July when retailers all around are trying to boost traffic. Target Corp’s TGT "Black Friday in July" runs through Monday. Target holds a summer Black Friday sale since 2010.

Best Buy Inc. BBY has a Black Friday sale scheduled for Jul 24–25 marking the third year of hosting the holiday season shopping fest during warmer months.

If the Prime Day sale campaign turns out to be a success for the retailers, customers can expect more such events in the summer months from other retailers, going ahead.
