TAUNTON, Mass., May 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- "What makes a house feel like a home?" asks Jordan's Furniture CEO Eliot Tatelman. "It's not furniture," comes the surprising answer, "It's family. But hundreds of kids living right here in Massachusetts are waiting for all the comforts of home AND family," he added.
That's why Jordan's Furniture, a long-time champion for children in state foster care, is hosting the Walk/Run for Adoption this Sunday, May 18 at the Jordan's Furniture's Taunton facility, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.
The Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE) and Jordan's Furniture are organizing the 5th annual 5K to benefit MARE's work to recruit adoptive parents for children and teens in state foster care. Over 600 local children are currently growing up in temporary foster care while waiting for permanent, loving homes. MARE's programs to find adoptive families include Wednesday's Child on WBZ TV, children's profiles in newspapers statewide, the Heart Gallery portrait exhibit of waiting children, and Adoption Matching Parties. MARE has helped more than 6,000 children leave foster care for permanent families over the past 56 years.
In attendance will be Jordan's President/CEO Eliot Tatelman, NECN's Eileen Curran, and WCVB's Bob Halloran who will welcome guests and kick-off the Walk.
Now including a chip-timed 5-K Run, the Walk/Run for Adoption is a fun-filled celebration of adoptive families. The post-walk party includes face painting, balloon twisting, DJ, stilt-walker, caricature artists, sand art, beachball decorating and other crafts, J& B Photobooth, a visit from the New England Patriots' mascot Pat Patriot, raffles, Dave & Buster's Prize Wheel, light lunch and refreshments.
Teams of adoptive families, friends, coworkers, students, and social workers are forming now. Participants can register online at www.MAREWalkRunForAdoption.org. Over 500 participated in last year's Walk, and raised $65,000 to help children join adoptive families.
Why walk or run for adoption? Last year's participants wrote their reasons on the Why I Walk Wall:
Nine-year-old Danica wrote "We come here to help give money so more kids can find their families like me."
Adoptive Mom Beth wrote "Because the first time I saw my son's face was on the MARE website."
Other reasons, in participant's own words and spellings:
"So everyone can be happy and because my best friend has the BEST adopted sister ever"
"So I can be a grandma again."
"Because our mom adoption Katle and me and Marcus. And I wanted adopt children future."
"Adoption completed our family."
"Because my parins love me."
The Walk/Run for Adoption is sponsored, hosted, and co-coordinated by Jordan's Furniture. Additional sponsors include Ernst & Young, WebsterOneSource, WickedLocal, Brookline Bank, Hannaford Supermarkets, Hint Water, the Knights of Pythias, and Kohl's Cares for Kids.
