In the following excerpt from the Investing Strategies Report, an experienced portfolio manager discusses his asset allocation philosophy for investors:

TWST: What themes are you following today? What are the most promising areas?

Mr. Bolton: It's fun now, because in 2008, 2009 and 2010, when we even talked about a theme, people were like, "You're in stocks versus cash?" At least now, you have the question, and people are excited to hear it on the client side.

We like the movement toward a healthy nation, and we think that's going to translate around the world. We have a position on the pharmacy side with CVS (CVS); we have a position with General Nutrition (GNC); we have a position in Whole Foods (WFM); and lastly, a new position is ConAgra (CAG), which is a private label producer. So when you go to a Whole Foods and you see Whole Foods rice and Whole Foods pastries, they are the ones who actually produce those products.

We have a very large position in the cloud computing area; everything, if it's not based in your house, it's on a server somewhere else. We have a position in Splunk (SPLK), which is very strong in the data management in cloud computing. We are currently making a play on the growth of data centers and the management of data centers.

In terms of industrial, we have a position in Boeing (BA). Our thesis on Boeing - and we have owned it for four years at a price of $60 - is that the 787 is going to be so good in terms of fuel efficiency, so attractive to the client in terms of getting from A to B in a very comfortable way. And you have that sprinkled on top of the workhorse 777 and the greatest workhorse in history, the 737, and we don't see their defense business folding like a tent - they are in the right part of the defense industry budget. So we are very very bullish that that is a multiyear play.

And then lastly, we are long the Twitter that you can play publicly, and that's Sina.com, which is based in China, and their Web users are over 400 million. And we have a position on eBay (EBAY), which seems to have growth in PayPal and good earnings...
