In the following excerpt from the Investing Strategies Report, an experienced portfolio manager discusses his investing methodology for investors:

TWST: Let's begin with a snapshot of the firm and an overview of your responsibilities at Essex.

Mr. Uek: Essex is an investment boutique. We're a 100% employee-owned firm, and we've been around since the late 1970s. The great benefit of being around for a while and having great leadership with Joe McNay who founded the firm, and Steve Cutler who has been here for over 30 years is, they give you the investment wisdom and background that helps from an investment standpoint.

We also have the establishment of a strong back office, great trading relationships, strong compliance that comes with an older firm, but also we have younger generation of managers to carry on the legacy and investment performance of the firm going forward into the future. So it kind of has the best of an older firm flavor with younger firm feeling, and growth trajectory.

Currently we have a little over $700 million in assets under management, and we're a firm that has always been focused on growth stocks. And the motto here has been finding growth wherever growth exists.

TWST: Could you give us a closer look at your guiding investment philosophy and strategies?

Mr. Uek: As I mentioned we are growth investors, and we do have a number of different portfolios where we achieve that. Historically, Essex has been a thematic investor - Joe McNay has always prided himself on finding early growth trends and early investment trends, and buying into exciting growth stocks that meet those trends.

We invest across a spectrum of market caps. We have some micro-cap portfolios and small-cap portfolios, midcap and large-cap. Most of our portfolios are domestically focused, and then our Global Environmental Opportunity Strategy, or GEOS, is an exception where we invest globally.

TWST: I see your primary responsibility is with GEOS; what are the other portfolios that you are involved in?

Mr. Uek: As you mentioned, GEOS is my primary responsibility, and I also have two other functions. One is overseeing our research portfolio, which is a best idea portfolio with stock picks from all of our analysts, and then I also assist Steve Cutler, managing some of his institutional and high-net-worth accounts which are mainly large-cap growth and growth and income.

TWST: Let's start with GEOS strategy. What are the secular themes within that portfolio?
