    Where's My Tax Refund?

    Fantasy Finance

No need to panic: Tax day is still far off -- the 2011 filing deadline this year is April 17. But plenty of early birds have filed well before the deadline, and now they want their refunds. Searches on "where's my refund" have been adding up on the Web.

The good news is, figuring out when you'll receive your tax refund from the IRS should be far less taxing this year with some new online tools. Here, some basic questions are answered.

    If you e-filed...

According to the IRS, taxpayers who file electronically and select direct deposit can expect a refund the fastest, in about 10 days. If not, expect to receive your refund within 21 days. In fact, the IRS claims that 90 percent of tax refunds are issued within 21 days.

What's the status of my return?

To find out what's happened to your refund, go to the IRS website's "Where's My Refund" tool,
download the IRS2Go app for smartphones, or watch the instructional video. OK, no points for production value, but hey, the IRS is on YouTube. That's a start.

When should I check for an update?

To find out when you'll receive your refund, check 72 hours after you file online or four weeks after you mail in a paper return.

You'll need your Social Security number, filing status, and the exact amount of your refund.

Bear in mind that this is the IRS, so the "estimated refund date" you'll see on the "Where's My Refund" site is just that: an estimate. Once you see the IRS has issued a refund, and if you asked for a paper check, well, then, the check is in the mail. And then allow five more days for it to reach you.

What is the fastest way to get a refund?

No question about it: Filing on the Web is the quickest way to a cash return -- and that's partly because filing online means fewer errors on the return -- such as an old address -- which can slow things down even more. Avoid delays by filing online and have the IRS deposit your refund directly into a checking or savings account.

They owe us refunds from 2007 up till last year.Still waiting! The longer they take the more interest and penalties they will owe me.the person on our case retired and we have to wait till this new person looks into it. I doubt an employee of the IRS is waiting for 6 years of refunds

Fastest way to get your tax refund?

Adjust your withholding and stop giving the government an interest free loan.
      • Shawn 3 months ago
yes that .025 interest rate you are mising out on. you are so wise.

If you use the money instead to pay down your credit card debt during the year you are saving 20%. If you put it in a savings account, sure you don't make much extra, but there are so many things you can do smarter than that.

Ok, so adjust your withholding and then you have to PAY the Gov., I think I would rather get something back,,yeah, I give them and interest free loan but at least I don't have to take out a loan to pay them.

One minute it will next it will be down.Seen it happen about ten times over a 3 week period. And most refunds were delayed by a week this year for some not all due to everyone filing early this year along with issues with the new IRS software. Some peoples information went into old system and had to work forward to new software.

Glad to see that others are waiting as well. Must be something about filing on Feb 2nd. I filed on that day, it was accepted almost immediately. The email said to expect my refund around 2/15. It's 2/19 and I don't even show up on the "where's my refund" tool. My friends filed the same day and they got the same designated date...they show up on the tool and their date was extended to 2/28. Not that I need that money desperately but it is annoying when you file early and don't get it when you are supposed to. When you owe the IRS you best believe they don't allow you to wait and postpone days. But that's how it goes.

I always use a tax preparation service to efile and request direct deposit. It is worth the cost and I get my returns within the time promised.

Not true... filed on the 3rd got confirmation on the 3rd from IRS they received... check site and not until yesterday did they acknowledge it and now we will be waiting until at least the 28th... my math puts that at 25 days for electronic filing.

Claudine I hope you didn't get paid alot of money to write this article. Sounds like you just took highlight information from the irs website and repeated it here. You didn't offer one piece of usefull insite or information into how the return process works. Let me help you.

Of course efile is faster then mail. It is fast by about the extra time it takes to mail an application to the IRS and for them to enter the information into their system. The process time for returns after this is the same either way.

The efile process takes a couple of days to accept (hence the 72hour peroid before you can check on the status of your return) and then 3 or 4 days minimum to process. These are in buisness days so including the weekend about the fastest you can expect a return is 10 days (as per the irs website). Also, they only issue refunds every 7-10 days so if you miss the filing date you could be as long as 21 days to recieve your return (so the check your return website will only tell you pay day you should fall). According to the IRS they get 90% of returns back in 21 days which translates to they process 90% of returns with no problems and 10% with problems which puts a longer then normaly return period.

I prepare taxes for a living, and this article is pure public relations. The IRS has changed it's computer processing methodology for this year, and has experienced MANY, MANY problems. It is true that filing electronically and getting direct deposit is fastest, but the IRS has missed it's target for issuing refunds for untold numbers of taxpayers. AlaskaMalGal's comment is one I am dealing with on a daily basis - people who I told to expect a refund by a particular date, based on the official IRS Refund Cycle Chart, who have not received their money. For yahoo to publish, and IRS to promote, this outright lie that direct deposit leads to a refund in 10 days is when it is manifestly untrue, is astounding. The IRS even keeps the "Where's My Refund" web tool in the dark - after filing my own return, I checked it daily and counted the days, and received my refund through direct deposit 6 days later than the web tool said - and it still has that incorrect date today. Yes, it's an estimate - but this year it's often fiction as well.

Same here..I filed turbo tax on 2/2 and it was accepted 2/2..couldnt get a response from WMR so I called the irs on the 15th amd spoke to a lady that looked my info up and said if I didnt get it by the 24th call back..Yesterday I was finally able to get my info from WMR and it gave a projected date of 3/6! It's crazy! I am changing my filing status this year right away to claim all of my deductions though the year so I don't have to mess with any of this next year..I have a feeling this is only the beginning!

I filed my return online with taxact last week. I went to the irs website and looked up where's my refund and it worked for me. It said I should expect my refund on Feb. 21. You might want to check yours again for those of you who said it didn't work. Or maybe you need to check your paper work and make sure you didn't make any errors with your account number or ssn.

Getting your tax refund faster when you file electronically is a big fat LIE! I filed on the 5th of Feb.and was suppose to get mine on the 15th and when I try to find out why I haven't gotten it yet they say I will get it in a week to 10 days and I still haven't gotten it yet.I think they should give me the money back that I paid to do it electronically.
