Why Older Workers are Better Workers

At a time when high unemployment numbers constantly make the headlines, companies can be selective about whom they want to hire. Older workers generally don't make the top of lists of potential job candidates for a variety of reasons, some real and some imagined. But with 10,000 baby boomers reaching the age of 65 each day for the next twenty years, hiring companies would do well to re-evaluate this untapped pool of labor, especially once our economy finally gets back on track.

[See Companies with the Most Older Workers.]

According to the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, people over the age of 40 are protected against being treated less favorably because of age. As these older workers become a bigger part of the workforce, hiring companies will need to objectively consider the positive and negative aspects of each candidate regardless of age. The good news is that, in many ways, older workers are better workers. Here's why older workers make excellent employees:

More direction. Many young people are still struggling to figure out what they want to do for their career and are getting their first exposure to the corporate world. Older workers generally possess a wealth of knowledge and experience gleaned over years of employment, and have a good idea of how to get the job done.

Less turnover. Older workers are less likely to job hop than younger employees. They typically have lower turnover and are absent less.

[See Older Worker Employment Reaches Record High.]

Experience pays off. Many older workers are experienced at the requirements of the job, and know what works and what does not work. This could allow them to get the job done more efficiently or to produce higher quality results. Contrary to popular belief, older employees do not cost employers more than younger workers, according to Peter Cappelli, coauthor of Managing the Older Worker: How to Prepare for the New Organizational Order. Higher wages are not based on age, but on experience, which often benefits the employer to the point that it is worth paying them at a higher level.

Understand the culture. Older employees know and live the corporate culture because they have been immersed in it for years. You won't find very many of them ignoring the dress code or posting inappropriate messages on Facebook.

Fewer dependents. When it comes to health care coverage, older employees do cost more because they are more likely to have health conditions and seek care. But older employees often no longer have as many dependents to include in the health plan as people with young families, which can actually save the company money.

[See 7 Tips for Working for a Younger Boss.]

Of course, older workers may need to be accommodated in some ways, especially if the job is physically strenuous. Older employees will be increasingly reporting to younger supervisors, which could cause friction that will need to be addressed. Flexible schedules may also be important to some seniors who want to pursue other interests outside a full-time job.

Yes Jason, The govt policy of allowing the rapid influx of foreigners to work in singapore has made it worst for older workers after 35 of age cos the foreigners r ridiculously cheaper. The foreigners could survive with a much lower pay cos they do not hv to pay for the high costs of housing and vehicle installment and children education, etc. esp when their families r not in singapore.

Some job scope cannot do without the experienced and older worker. In fact, older workers should be supervising and impart their knowledge to the younger ones before they retire. In that way, it will be gain-gain situation but sadly most companies do not feel that. They felt that the dollar value in paying older workers are not "worth" it. I think SMRT are learning their lesson from the bad decision that they had made by making their snr workers to have early retirement.

Amen, loss of IP when these experience ppl leave. In actuality, experience always trumps qualification where work is concerned.
    • Bosses are 3 months ago
Bosses exploiting the older workers, why should they impart their knowledge to the younger ones, firstly the bosses should reward them equally as the younger ones. The older workers salary started on a low entry point and after years of service, their salaries get stagnanted and salary of the younger ones overtake them, and yet the older workers have to take more responsbilities than the younger one, and the bosses claimed the older workers salary is competitive "without fact and figures" furthermore, employer;s CPF cut when you reach 50years old, good example is our garment exploiting our older workers. Our Nation Pledge "BASE ON JUSTICE AND EQUALITY" please delete them from the pledge.

Older workers know that each moment and each dime they earn could be their last, and they do not want to waste whatever strength they have left.

If you are over 50, forget about applying for govt full-time jobs even if you have met all the academic qualifications and working experience.

Their HR only does their job like going through motions and avoid troubles. Their priority goes in tis sequence. First is the paper qualification, then comes the age. This is their safe method to avoid being troubled by human relation problems.

unless you confirm and double confirm to the HR that you are amongst the 60%

In countries like Australia, age is never even mentioned in their resume. They can have the right not to disclose it even if you ask. Either you hire me based on my resume or not. Singapore got a long way to learn! Just like have a dog eat with you at the hawker centre. Slow and long way for Singapore. Thumbs now for the employers! Losers!

If you walk into the casino you notice that most of the employees are elderly people. Here the casino will tell you that you are too old.

In Aust it is unlawful if a person is refused employment because of gender, age or race. Singapore has yet to go a long way to reach this stage. The irony is Aust never boast to the whole world that they are champions of equality unlike Singapore.

In Singapore, anyone aged 35 is considered old folk and a burden to the company.
It is much economical to employ a pool of young FTs and retrench them when downturn comes.

I agree with this article. I see a great divide in mentality between the older and younger workers. Somehow, the younger ones are rather impatient and want to move up the ladder vey quickly, while the older generation are more patient and steady. The age of instant gratification is probably the reason. Fast food, fast computers, on line transactions, rapid transport..... However, the best results are still achieved with patience, hard work and humility.
  • Melissa  •  Singapore, Singapore  •  3 months ago
I can definitely vouch for older workers... they do go the extra mile with services....whereas many of the younger ones go for several cigarette breaks, and even when at work, are constantly on their mobile phones, either messaging orTwittering or checking out their Facebook accounts..

To keep your Job, do not teach those FTs. Once they know, they stab you in the back. This is from an experience person.
  • MichaelS  •  3 months ago
Apart from experience i do admit old worker do manage stress better than young workers.
I do admire people whom are cool and definitely not people whom are hot tempered over slightest issues.

My former boss had a hard time accepting me in her team because I am older than she is. She would always try to find a mistake so she could have the ground to fire me. But years went on, and from the 6 supervisors she was handling, I was the only one who stayed in her team, giving her my opinions and "advices" when she would run to me (she secretly came to me frequently for advise). Yet she would get all the credits for my works and ideas. I never claimed anything as I understood that deep inside, I knew and the others knew as well, that it was I who was working harder. Four years passed, stagnant with my previous work (no forward movement in my career), finally, I'm now working in another company which sees the value of a hard-working employee. My former boss still sends me messages of "friendship." Knowing her, this is her way of saying she misses me. As for me, my experience working with her added something to my wit that the youths will be earning in time. To all those younger bosses, appreciate those older good workers of yours because it is them who will try to help you in any way they can because as some older workers think, it's the youths turn to shine, and they'd be there to help you shine. :)

Cheap, cheaper and cheapest and Singapore Bosses goes for the Cheaper than Cheapest. Don't expect this to change anytime. If the Cheaper than Cheapest can't get the work done, your boss will ask you to train them to replace you.

Singaporeans above age 35 are considered old against the FTs . So age 35 to 55 means old & your kids all growth up already ????? The suffering age group is 35-55 which most are still heavily supporting the families. how to accept low pay ???? how to compete with FTs ???
  • Ministermental  •  3 months ago
Make it a rule that every company must employ a certain percentage of workers above 55 years of age. It is better to start now than to start worrying when in future there will be so many unemployed old people becoming a burden to the state. Set up a scheme now. By the way what is the Minister who is supposed to look into this, actually doing? Nothing concrete being done in this regard.
  • dwine  •  Atlanta, Georgia  •  3 months ago
Most of the older workers in a company is actually a well-experienced workers they know the ins and outs of the company. They are dedicated workers less supervision and lesser complaints because they love what they are doing.. and they enjoy it so much that is why till they reached the retirement period they still insist to work..
