A Southwest Houston woman named Patience Lacordia has been selling her plasma to keep her electricity on, according to Joel Eisenbaum with Click2Houston.com.
"Everything in this house has been pawned in order to pay a light bill," Lacordia told Eisenbaum. "There's a place down the street called 'The Biomat.' I was going to 'The Biomat' to donate plasma in order to pay the electric bill."
As weird as it sounds, donating plasma can earn you an extra $35 to $40 per visit, according to Yahoo contributor Josh Hicks. The actual procedure is similar to giving blood: A nurse will stick a needle in your arm to extract about half a gallon of fluid from your body. But unlike donating blood you can donate plasma twice in the same week, since your body replenishes plasma so quickly.
Lacordia isn't the only American struggling to get fair treatment from her utility provider. In Georgia, Blayne Beacham, has been struggling to pay her water bill since it has suddenly ballooned to $9,000 in less than a year, according to BI's Mandi Woodruff.
Selling things like plasma, eggs and sperm to pay debts is becoming a lot more common. The Daily Mail reports, as a 28-year-old business woman put her eggs up for sale online in hopes of paying off her student loans.
