4 Retail Stocks Up 5% in the Past Month
Global economic headwinds, a yet-to-recover Chinese economy, and fluctuating commodity prices are still testing the resiliency of the U.S. economy. The economy expanded 1.4% during the fourth quarter of 2015 but market pundits are now anticipating a slowdown in momentum in the first quarter of 2016. The Fed also refrained from a rate hike, given the challenges in the global economy along with a lackluster earnings outlook for the first quarter that have dampened investors’ mood.
Sluggishness across the European and Japanese economies are the latest hurdles that are compelling even stoic investors to think twice before making any investment decision. The divergent views of Fed officials regarding rate hikes also flared up uncertainty but the Fed Chair has once again reassured investors that rates will be hiked gradually and only when the economy is balanced enough to withstand headwinds.
The U.S. stock market gave a sluggish performance at the start of the year owing to fears of overseas turmoil and plunging oil prices. Although the market has recouped much of the losses, it is yet to breathe a sigh of relief. Nevertheless, even in such a scenario, the “Retail Sector” still holds the baton. Here we have highlighted four retail stocks that saw share prices move up over 5% in the last one month. Also, these stocks outperformed the major indices.
Flaunting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), ULTA Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance, Inc. (ULTA) and Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. ( BECN) saw their shares rising 7.3% and 9.2%, respectively, in the past one month. The other two stocks – Sonic Corp. (SONC) and The Children's Place, Inc. (PLCE) – jumped 9.6% and 11.5%, respectively, in the same timeframe and carry a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
In the same period, The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained about 2.9%, while the S&P 500 rose approximately 2.1%. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index advanced roughly 2.6%.
