Zimmer: FDA clears knee surgery guidance system

Zimmer Holdings says FDA clears smaller, personalized knee surgery guidance system

Associated Press

WARSAW, Ind. (AP) -- Zimmer Holdings Inc. said Thursday the Food and Drug Administration cleared a new guidance system designed for use in knee replacement surgeries.

The company said its iAssist Knee system uses small, disposable electronic components at the site of the surgery and a simple electronic display. Zimmer said the system does not require pins or additional surgical incisions, and no external monitoring systems are needed.

Zimmer said other guidance systems require complex and bulky additional equipment, external computer screens, and a clear line of sight into the surgical area.

Shares of Zimmer rose $1.09 to $73 on Thursday and picked up 13 cents to $73.13 in aftermarket trading.
