    Zooey Deschanel Saves Her Pennies

    Fantasy Finance

Hollywood stars are known for their spendthrift ways. Tinseltown is littered with celebrities who spent first and saved later (or not at all). Occasionally, though, somebody bucks the trend -- somebody like Zooey Deschanel

Zooey DeschanelThe actress/singer recently split from her husband, Death Cab for Cutie lead singer Ben Gibbard. Deschanel's lawyer filed her financial information with the courts. And we have to say, Deschanel may be the most sensible celebrity ever. Credit card debt? Zero. Investments? Substantial. Charitable donations? Generous.

Here's a rough look at how the finances break out:

Salary from TV show "New Girl" -- $95,000 per month
    Dining-out expenses -- $500 per month
Clothing expenses -- $2,000 per month
    Laundry/cleaning expenses -- $600 per month
Cell phone and email expenses --- $300 per month
Charitable donations -- $1,500 per month
    Credit card debt -- $0

OK, so she's not exactly living like a pauper. Anybody who spends $2,000 a month on clothes clearly isn't afraid to skip the sale rack. And how does one drop $600 per month on dry cleaning? But, on the whole, Deschanel is a pretty smart cookie, financially speaking. She has over $1.5 million in the bank, and about $1.6 million in stocks and other investments. She also owns property worth close to $700,000.

Sorry about the marriage, Zooey. But at least you're saving your cash. Remember when the divorce papers from Britney Spears leaked back in 2007? Monthly salary: $737,000. Amount saved per month: Zero.

I really don't care about her money. I love a brunet with blue eyes. What beautiful woman.

It is a great combo dark hair w/ blue eyes -- lol I'm NOWHERE even CLOSE to being as cute as her but I like the fact that the combo is such a turnon for men!
      • rick 4 months ago
Agreed. Dark hair and light eyes = best combo there is.

So she's kind and smart. People who've followed her career have known that for years. When you factor in her musical career with her acting career and casual life, $2,000 on clothing seems much more sensible. Besides, the girl has style. It's her money anyway, and I doubt most of the people reading this article pay 1.6% to their income to charity.

I like her too but I totaly disagree that most people donate less than 1.578947368% of their income...I think most people donate closer to 10%.

Thats because we are the charity with the low paying jobs I am sure many of readers get, most of us can't even contribute to an emergency cash fund or even an IRA let alone charity.

Zooey, sorry about the divorce, but a few things for you to consider:
      1. My mom says I'm handsome.
      2. I eat salad with my steaks, so I'm almost vegetarian.
      3. I don't smell that bad.
      4. I promise not to drool over your sister in front of you.

at least she donates to charity every month. I think that's pretty huge and selfless.
      • Mozart 4 months ago
It's probably a lump sum amount, broken out by month.

Good for her, I wish more people with that kind of money donate more to real need poeple, lots of starving children and dying of diseases. The world needs people like Zooey. Smart and kind and beautiful 3 lethal combination. Good for her.

She may need a man for some things, but money is not one of them. Good for you, Zooey!!
    • parentofthree  •  4 months ago
It is nobody's business what she does with her money. Seems like a personal matter to me.
    • mj  •  Sacramento, California  •  4 months ago
Divide her salary by 100 and you have my monthly take home pay! But seriously I'm not complaining I'm soooo glad I have a job. If only we could all be so fortunate as Ms Deschanel. Anyways I like the budget. Very happy she gives to charity, I try to. Even if it's only $1 or $5 to a local charity I'm sure it helps!

It would have been better if they did not even mention "Charitable donations" She does not have to donate anything at all, but is thoughtful enough too anyway. Yet people will comment on how little she donates.... in relation to everything else she spends her money on she is more for charity than most..... people always looking for something to complain about.... How much did you donate today?

    • Z!  •  Lafayette, Louisiana  •  4 months ago
OMG people come on! $2000 on clothes is nothing when you have that lifestyle and need clothes for events (not always FREE) . Thumbs up to her for the 0 credit card debt !
    • Travis  •  Nashville, Tennessee  •  4 months ago
What's up with all these comments hating her because she makes good money? Get off your lazy #$%$ and make something of yourself instead of sitting on it complaining about those who do.

Why is it when a hollywood actress makes 95K per month everyone is ok with that. However, when a doctor makes 200K per year, they are money grubbing leaches? What is wrong with this picture?
    • Thal  •  Springfield, Massachusetts  •  4 months ago
This doesn't surprise me too much. Zooey has always seemed level-headed. As far as $2000 a month on clothing, to the normal person that's extreme, but compare it to the typical holywood star and I'm betting it's close to nothing. And the $600 dry cleaning, if you have a $24,000/year wardrobe, I'm thinking you want it cleaned by the best dry cleaner possible. Also, let's not forget that due to media, celebs aren't allowed to wear the same thing more than once a month.

Thanks Yahoo! for putting her out there like this. Jerks.
    • 4rest_Gump  •  4 months ago
Brittney Spears $737,000 A MONTH! and saved zero? how the hell does someone do that?

I would have trouble spending 5K a month.

This should be none of our business. Another reason why some things in today's world are not for the better. None of us is better off knowing this and it is not in the public interest. When does it stop?
    • raymond  •  Bartlett, Illinois  •  4 months ago
Well yea she has no credit card debt, millionaires don't need credit, they can pay up front.
    • Patrick  •  Boca Raton, Florida  •  4 months ago
Just because something is available to share with the population of the world, doesnt make it right or news worthy to do so. Possibly, you journalists could take on something of an importance to our nation and quit with the tabloid topics.
